Both boys love to climb, but Smalls hasn’t attempted any trees yet. We don’t have great climbing trees in our yard, so he hasn’t really had the opportunity. Last week we went for a picnic in a local park with kindergarten friends, and they found a perfect tree. Smalls watched, for a moment, as Red picked his limbs and started ascending.
“Are you coming?” Red asked, looking down at his brother.
Smalls nodded and jumped up onto the first branch, confident under the protection of his big brother. I stood back and watched, and wondered at these two and their close bond. I hope their relationship is always so easy and trusting, and while I know it can’t be like this all the time, I’m delighted at the solid base they’re starting with. Climb high boys, together.
