Snap It Outdoors: Map reading

My boys are obsessed with treasure maps, or more specifically, finding treasure. I’m trying to plan an elaborate scavenger hunt for them for summer vacation, which is perilously close, and agonizing over how complicated to make the map, the clues, where to go and how to draw it.

This is us at the weekend, out biking at Bogus Basin, our local mountain where we ski all winter and hike and bike in the summer. As we stopped for a break, I checked the backpacks for snacks, a band-aid one of the boys needed, calculated how much more Smalls would take before getting off his bike and walking. I looked up, and there was my husband showing them the trail map, pointing out the lodge, the runs we skied, and the biking trail we were about to take. They were entranced, amazed to see things they knew and the weaving of the colored lines marking the trail. Here was my treasure.
